In boxes of bananas donated to a prison in Texas, found cocaine for $ 18 million

“Sometimes life gives you lemons. Sometimes she gives you bananas. And sometimes - something you don’t expect!”, representatives of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice wrote on the official Facebook page. The fact is that in 45 boxes of bananas donated to the needs of a Texas prison, authorities found a shipment of cocaine worth almost $18 million.

After no one claimed their rights to the 45 crates of bananas that arrived in the port of Texas, the staff donated the fruit to the Wayne Scott Unit prison by contacting the State Criminal Justice Department, writes 7News Miami.

No one had a clue that in addition to bananas, the boxes would also contain a huge amount of drugs.

To ship the bananas and deliver them to their destination, two sergeants arrived at the port on Friday morning. But in the process of weighing the boxes, Department staff realized that one of the boxes differed in weight from the others. Having opened it, inside they found a batch of packets with a white powdery substance, which was covered with bundles of fruit.

The officers immediately notified the port authorities and awaited their instructions. American customs officers responded to the discovery and, on arriving at the scene, conducted a test that confirmed that the package contained cocaine.

A total of 540 bags of narcotic substances were found hidden in two pallets with bananas. According to experts, the cost of these drugs is estimated at 17 820 000 US dollars.

An investigation is underway, in which both the Drug Enforcement Division and the US Border Guard are involved.
