Moskvich brought a shamanic drink from Peru and received 11 years in prison

The Domodedovo court of the Moscow region sentenced a resident of Moscow Maxim Herth to 11,5 years in prison for smuggling a narcotic substance, which he brought from a medical and tourist trip to Peru.

As told Air force Attorney for the convict Vladimir Brigadin, a young man worked as a graphic designer at TSUM and went to Peru to heal.

“He has been suffering from a spinal disease for a long time, and none of the traditional treatment methods helped him. He read that there are specialized shamanic centers in Peru, and went there for treatment,” says the lawyer.

Among Peruvian shamans, the Muscovite drank a traditional decoction of “ayahuasca,” which has hallucinogenic properties. Since he did not have time to complete the course of treatment before returning home, he decided to take a liter of the drink to Moscow to drink it at home for another month.

“He brought [the drink] very openly, checked it in his luggage, changed planes in Madrid, and no one stopped him anywhere,” the lawyer says.

Problems began when passing through customs inspection at a Moscow airport: customs officers decided to withdraw the bottle and send it for examination. According to its results, 465 grams of the drug of dimethyltryptamine, banned in Russia, was found in the bottle.

No hallucinations

The court handed down a sentence to Maxim Gert under articles 228.1 (illegal production, sale or shipment of narcotic drugs) and 229.1 (smuggling of narcotic drugs) of the criminal code of Russia. According to the court file, the verdict was passed on 26 June, but the media only paid attention to it now.

Protection suggests that in fact the concentration of the prohibited substance in the drink was negligible. In addition, according to the lawyer, experts say that dimethyltryptamine does not have narcotic properties as part of the liquid, since it is metabolized in the body.

“It is also important to understand that dimethyltryptamine is found in every person, it is produced by our brain along with serotonin, and it is also found in animal meat,” says the lawyer.

At the same time, psychiatrist-narcologist Alexey Kazantsev, in an interview with Reedus, noted that dimethyltryptamine is a powerful psychedelic and is somewhat similar to LSD.

“[The substance] causes intense experiences, auditory and visual hallucinations. At first, it seems to a person that he perceives the reality in which he was constantly located. Then he begins to experience hallucinatory experiences,” the expert said.

As noted by the Internet edition TagilCity.ru referring to the friends of the accused, he himself claimed that when using the drink he did not have any hallucinations, there was no narcotic intoxication and dependence, and the taste of the decoction caused him disgust.

Also, according to the newspaper, at the court hearing it was established that the young man is not a drug addict and does not have friends and acquaintances who use drugs.

Not the first time

Last year, the same judge of the Domodedovo District Court sentenced 66-year-old Brazilian shaman Shianca Roshi Eduardo in a similar case.

The Brazilian was detained after customs at Domodedovo airport found four two-liter bottles of ayahuasca infusion in his luggage.

Brazilian President Michel Temer himself spoke up for the shaman, who at the BRICS summit in India asked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for Russia to reconsider the situation with Shianca Rosh.

During the process, the Brazilian claimed that he did not know about the narcotic properties of the drink and about the ban on its import into Russia. As a result, the court sentenced him to 6,5 years in prison for drug smuggling.

Later, the Moscow Regional Court considered the appeal of the shaman’s defense and reduced his sentence to three years.

Customs found in household chemicals a substance recognized in Russia as psychotropic and prohibited for free distribution.
