Marijuana-based drug first approved in US

Sweet Pill Epidiolex intended to help patients with two rare types of congenital epilepsy. The drug, which reduces cramps, was tested on 500 volunteers, it is a syrup with strawberry flavor.

The main component of the drug is a chemical cannabidiol, which is part of hemp. Cannabidiol itself does not cause drug intoxication. Exactly how he relieves the intensity of seizures, doctors still do not fully understand.

Production of the drug will begin in the fall.

In the US, medical marijuana is legal in 29 states; at the same time, in nine of them its recreational use is permitted. Under federal law, possession of marijuana and its use for any purpose is considered illegal.
