A man named Demetrius Pitts, who swore allegiance to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization, was arrested on Sunday after meeting with an FBI agent who was working undercover, to whom he announced his plans to plant a bomb at the July 4 parade.

“Pitts' statements of intent to commit acts of a violent nature continue to cause concern during the investigation. He expressed his readiness to commit a terrorist act in the United States, as well as to join a foreign terrorist organization, ”said FBI executive officer in Cleveland Stephen Anthony at a press conference on Monday.

“His Facebook posts are, frankly, disturbing. In particular, there were formulations of such a nature as “we, Muslims, must act like this every day, we must be able to shoot, throw hand grenades and have hand-to-hand combat skills,” he added.

According to authorities, during the last meeting with an undercover agent on Sunday, Pitts expressed a desire to take part in the Cleveland attack on Independence Day, as well as a desire to kill soldiers, their relatives and agents at the federal and local levels.

“A federal court indicted Pitts in an attempt to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, in this case Al-Qaida. The maximum penalty provided for such a charge is 20 years of imprisonment, ”Justin Herdman, a federal prosecutor in the northern district of Ohio, said during a briefing on Monday.

According to officials, Pitts, who has US citizenship and has been influenced by radical ideas in the United States, will be brought to trial on Monday.
