In New York, will increase the age from which you can smoke
State legislators voted to raise the age at which to smoke, from 18 to 21.
Legislation, adopted by the Assembly last month, prohibits the sale of tobacco products, as well as electronic cigarettes to persons who have not reached the 21 year.
“Anything we can do to prevent young people from becoming addicted to tobacco is the right thing for the government to do,” bill sponsor Sen. Diane Savino told the Daily News.
Cuomo applauded the decision and said he would sign the bill.
“The health impact of tobacco across the lifespan cannot be overstated, and in New York we are committed to doing everything we can to keep tobacco products out of the hands of young people,” the statement said.
The city of New York itself will not feel the innovation in any way, since back in 2013, Mayor Bloomberg signed a law according to which 21 years is the minimum age for purchasing cigarettes in the city.
After signing the bill, New York State will join seven other states where tobacco products and electronic cigarettes will not be sold to people younger than 21.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the number of high school students who smoke, including electronic cigarettes, increased by about 38%. Officials noted the demand for the use of electronic cigarettes, which grew by almost 78% compared to last year.
A report by the National Academy of Medicine showed that raising the age of smoking to 21 of the year "will have a significant positive impact on the health of the population and save lives."
The bill states that increasing the age of smoking to 21 will result in children in high school not being able to smoke. The main task is to postpone the start of smoking as long as possible.оlonger term
