In New York, the metro station opens, destroyed during the September 11 terrorist attack
After пIt’s 17 years after the New York subway station Cortlandt Street was severely damaged as a result of the September 11 2001 attacks, it will reopen in October.
The updated station will be decorated with works by artist Ann Hamilton, which contain phrases from the United Nations International Declaration of Human Rights and the United States Declaration of Independence, writes 6SqFt.
Station Cortlandt street was supposed to open in 2014, but due to a dispute over the financing of this project, the opening was postponed until October of 2018.
Located directly under the World Trade Center building, the station was destroyed due to the fall of the building. To restore the operation of this metro line, the workers had to finish and rebuild the affected part of the tunnel. The 1-th subway line in New York, where the station is located, resumed a year after the terrorist attacks, but the station itself remained closed.
In 2008 year Port Authority and the MTA reached an agreement on the reconstruction of the station. The document provided that MTA will pay Port Authority for restoration Cortlandt Street. Seven years later, MTA took over this project, but the installation of the final design elements took place with great delays. From May 2015 to October 2018, workers install the new tile and light the station.
In total, the restoration of the station was spent 182 million dollars.
