In Minnesota, the court acquitted the policeman who shot the driver

In Minnesota, the court found innocent police officer Geronimo Yanez, who in 2016, 7, once shot a black driver, school cafeteria worker Filando Castil, who was stopped because of headlight malfunction. A 32-year-old driver was killed in front of his wife and 4-year-old daughter.

The case file states that the driver had a weapon with him, as he warned the policeman; after that, a 7 police officer shot a man once.

The court considered the video from the car registrar insufficient to prove Janez’s guilt, since the record does not show what was in Castil’s hands. Yanez was not convicted, but dismissed from the police.

As follows from the recording frames, Geronimo Yanez approached the car and told the driver that one of the stop lights was not working on the car. Castil handed over a document to the policeman, after which he declared that he had a weapon with him.

“Then don't get him,” said Yanez, after which Castil began to answer him, but the policeman did not let him finish his conversation and repeated the request not to take the weapon.

“I don’t get it,” Castil assured eventually, his wife also joined him.

- Do not reach! The officer shouted again, and 7 shot a man once.

“I didn't get it,” Castile told him after the shots.

After the incident, the officer’s partner ran up to the car and took the little girl from there, the policeman himself kept his gun pointing through the driver’s window.

Later it became known that before approaching Castile's car, the police officer told his radio colleagues that the man he had stopped looked like a suspect in a robbery - he noted that he had the same flat nose. Then, during the investigation, he explained that he felt the smell of marijuana in the car’s cabin: “The car smelled of marijuana, and I didn’t know why he needed a gun in order to defend himself from drug dealers or those who wanted to rob him.” According to the police, the driver was trying to get something out of his pocket, and he suggested that he was reaching for a gun. The man did not react to the calls to stop doing this, and his shoulder also blocked the view of the policeman.

At some point, it seemed to Janez that Castil grabbed a gun, and with his other hand he was going to take away the policeman’s weapons. Fearing for his life, he began to shoot. The policeman did not find the pistol in the man’s hands.

The acquittal of the police caused outrage of a large part of the public. In the capital of Minnesota, St. Paul has passed a series of rallies against police violence.

It should be noted that in the USA police officers are extremely rarely tried for murders in the service. According to ABC News, from 2005 onwards, only 78 police officers across the country were charged with unmotivated violence during execution, and were sentenced to jail just for killing only one of them. A guilty verdict is imposed only when there is no reason to doubt that the police officer has indeed grossly violated his job descriptions, allowing him to open fire in the event that his life and safety is threatened.
