In Los Angeles, detained family, despite the presence of visas

Lawyers of the International Refugee Assistance Project prepared a petition demanding the release of five members of an Afghan family detained in the United States, despite having valid entry visas.

An Afghan couple with 2 children was taken into custody shortly after arriving at Los Angeles airport last week. They had special immigration visas issued to foreign nationals for hazardous work for the US Army.

It is reported that the man was placed in a special penitentiary in California, and his wife and children are in a hotel in Los Angeles.

As noted in the petition filed in the district court in Santa Ana, the family was detained without any reason and in violation of the US Constitution. One of the lawyers for the Talia Inlender family noted that such a case is extremely rare, if not unique, for holders of this type of visa.

Afghanistan is not among the 7 Muslim countries whose citizens have been temporarily prohibited from issuing visas, according to a decree by President Donald Trump.
