In Long Beach, beaches are closed due to spills of sewage
At least 5,6 million liters of wastewater fell into the Los Angeles River and caused the closure of all beaches in Long Beach.
The emergency service worked all night from Monday to stop the growing flow of sewage.
According to Paul Gomez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Public Works Department, the cause of the accident was a collapse inside the top of the sewer. As a result, the wastewater began to pour out of the clogged pipe, reached the Los Angeles River and headed towards Long Beach.
On Tuesday, July 19, specialists will take water samples from the ocean to determine if they pose any risks to public health. This was stated by Nelson Kerr, Head of the City Bureau for Environmental Health. According to him, there have not yet been any reports of wastes on city beaches.
The Los Angeles River extends 81 km. It originates in the mountain ranges. Simi hills и Santa Susana Mountains, flows through Los Angeles and ends at Long Beach.
