In California, a child saved the whole family during a fire

12-year-old girl is now considered a heroine.

12-year-old Stephanie Arellano saved her family from a raging fire in Perry, California. The girl showed courage and smashed the window to help her brothers and sisters get out of the house on fire.

She said that the cause of the fire was a portable heater, which began to emit uncharacteristic noise a few minutes after switching on.

“My mom was getting ready to turn on the heater, it was pretty cold,” she said, describing the moment the fire started.

“She screamed, I woke up. I didn’t know what to do, so I broke the window,” Stephanie said.

“I jumped out myself, and then helped my mother get the rest of the children out,” added the little heroine.

Within a few minutes, the family house was almost completely burned out.

“Clothes, jewelry, photos,” said older sister Diana Arellano. “Photos... they say they last forever,” she said, holding a photo album, blackened and almost destroyed in the fire.

Stephanie and her parents and siblings were rushed to hospital to be treated for their injuries and burns. The girl had stitches on her hand because she cut herself on broken glass. The girl doesn’t think much about her heroic deed, but is glad that everyone is alive.

“I’m happy because if I didn’t do this, they would be dead now,” Stephanie said. “I’m just happy they’re still on Earth.”

The Arellano family has only clothes that were on them at the time of the fire.
