In Germany, a truck drove into people, there are dead and wounded

In Munster in western Germany, a van drove into a crowd of passersby, three people were killed, about twenty were injured, six of them are in critical condition. According to police, the driver of the van shot himself.

Air force, citing police, said officers were no longer looking for suspects in connection with the incident. According to them, a “suspicious object” was found in the van, but what exactly it was was not reported.

The incident is being investigated as an attack, but not yet classified as a terrorist attack.

However, the executive director of the Brandenburg Institute for the Study of Society and Security, an expert on national security issues, Tim Stuthai, said in an interview with BBC:

“Everything looks like it was done on purpose. It's like it's a terrorist attack. At the same time, at the moment we have no information about who is behind this. There are approximately 730 people in our country who, according to the police, could or would carry out an attack. And they are being monitored."

German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called the incident a “serious violent crime” and expressed condolences to the victims’ loved ones, writes DW.

“During these hours, my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. My deepest condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one,” he said, also thanking “all law enforcement officers and rescue services on duty.”

“We mourn together with Munster,” wrote in Twitter European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. He expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims and thanked the participants of the special operation.

According to local media, the van ran over people sitting in the cafe at the tables.

User Twitter Roeland Roovers writes that all the tables and chairs in the cafe in the square where the hitting occurred are overturned.

The arrival of the van occurred in the old part of the city, near the statue Kiepenkerl.

Police in Twitter asks people to avoid this part of the city.

“There are dead and wounded. Please avoid the area, we are on the scene,” the local police said in a tweet.

The police also asked in Twitter do not post photos from the scene.

Münster is located in the west of Germany in North Rhine-Westphalia.
