USCIS has changed the procedure for setting up asylum interviews in the US

Starting from 29 in January of 2018, the Asylum Division, which is part of the Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), will give priority to the most recent applications when setting up interviews and checks. This is reported on department site.

This approach to the asylum process was already applied from 1995 to 2014 a year. After that, it was decided to consider old applications earlier than new ones.

Such a change in scheduling interviews and inspections will quickly cut off applicants who try to use the long period between applying for asylum and immediately starting to consider it only to obtain a work permit by filing unfounded, fraudulent or otherwise unjustified applications for asylum.

By giving priority to new applications, USCIS will be able to immediately identify such individuals and begin the process of their deportation, which reduces the incentive for other applicants to work in the US and file unsubstantiated applications for asylum. This approach will also allow USCIS to make decisions about qualified asylum seekers more quickly and efficiently.

Currently, USCIS plans to schedule an asylum interview in the following order:

• First priority: applications that have already been interviewed, but the interview had to be moved at the request of the applicant or by USCIS decision.
• Second priority: applications that were in standby mode start the 21 verification process a day or less.
• Third priority: all other pending asylum applications. Interviews for them will be assigned after the completion of work with new applications.

USCIS notes that workload and other factors may affect the ability of the agency to schedule interviews for new applications on the 21 of the day, but that’s the goal.

In addition, previously submitted asylum seekers can request an urgent interview, decisions on them will be made on an individual basis.

For asylum seekers who live far from USCIS offices, interviews will be held at the so-called field offices.
