Hurricane Sergio carries abnormally high waves to California

On Friday, meteorologists predicted that Hurricane Sergio could completely change its direction in the Pacific Ocean and turn in the direction of the Baha-California Peninsula. Recent data reports: a hurricane may affect Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico this week.

Three days ago, the US National Hurricane Center reported that on Friday Sergio was a 3 category with maximum steady 120 winds miles per hour (more than 190 km / h). Then he was about a thousand miles (1600 km) from the southern point of the peninsula, and representatives of the Hurricane Center said that the spontaneous phenomenon deviates towards the west and south-west, writes KTLA.

It was expected that in the next few days, the hurricane would make a U-shaped turn towards California, picking up speed.

Now the spontaneous phenomenon has been lowered to the 2 storm category. Sergio is expected to land on land as a tropical storm, threatening southern California, Arizona and New Mexico with high waves, heavy rain and flash floods, writes Newsweek.

Sergio will make landfall in the central Baja California peninsula, south of Mexico's Tijuana, on Thursday or Friday, according to Accuweather. Heavy torrential rain will accompany the storm's inland movement, with showers passing over the southwestern United States.

"The risk of flash flooding and landslides may be back on track for parts of Arizona and New Mexico, but these states could benefit from more rain after persistent drought," Accuweather.com said.

The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Sergio is taking on a more organized classic hurricane shape.

“Somewhat quickly and unexpectedly, Sergio took on the form of an annular hurricane overnight,” the center said Sunday morning. — The eye of the hurricane expanded, almost doubling in size. The hurricane is still somewhat asymmetrical, indicating that it may not develop a classic ring structure—at least not yet."

According to representatives of the Center, Sergio still has to slow down and turn first to the north, and then to the northeast over the following days. By the middle of the week, moving south, it can accelerate and go to Baja California. As it approaches land, it will become a tropical storm, with the most stable 50 winds per hour (80 km / h).

The latest data indicates that a storm may cross Southern California and head to Arizona or New Mexico. Most likely, in all areas there will be heavy rain.
