In case of emergency in New York, animals will be rescued as official family members.
No pet will be in danger anymore. On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law stating that pets can be transported by any public transport service during an emergency.
During the superstorm Sandy, many pet owners refused to evacuate from flooded neighborhoods because they did not have the opportunity to transport their dogs and cats, the governor quotes New York Post.
“For many New Yorkers, pets are part of their families and no one should be forced to leave them in the event of an evacuation,” Cuomo said.
"I am proud to sign this sensible, sensible and humane law that will help pet owners in times of disaster."
The bill was drafted by local legislator Linda Rosenthal and Senator Andrew Lanza. The latter noted that the current law allows the transport of animals on buses and on MTA trains.
The new law expands the scope of all forms of public transport, including the PATH Port Authority trains.
New Jersey passed a similar law in 2013. Both state legislatures must take action to enforce the law in the territory covered by the Port Authority.
