The danger of tornadoes in the United States remains, especially for the coastal areas of South and North Carolina, writes The Washington Post. The first tornadoes began to spin in the outer rain strips of Hurricane Dorian on Thursday morning, 5 September, causing damage in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Another tornado passed near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, shortly before sunrise on the same day. A vortex also formed a few kilometers northwest of Onslow County, North Carolina, resulting in a tornado from which fragments scattered to a height of more than 1,5 kilometers. Radars show that it was uncharacteristically strong for a tornado generated by a tropical cyclone.

Hurricane-spawned tornadoes are the worst but most common form of whirlwind weather.

“Rotation begets rotation,” says Andrew Friedman of the Capital Weather Gang. Rotating systems tend to carry "embedded" smaller vortices. This means that it is easy for small vortex phenomena—tornadoes and waterspouts—to spin in the outer rain bands of a hurricane.

When the gusts of a hurricane move to land, winds at the lowest levels of the atmosphere slow down, and air rushes unhindered to the ground. This change in wind speed / direction with altitude forms a kind of slice. The effect is exacerbated by winds coming out of the eye of the hurricane at higher levels and expanding clockwise, against the surface influx. Result? Sections of a thunderstorm extending through the deeper layers of the atmosphere will receive torsional force. Tornadoes are easily developed simultaneously by dozens. The vast majority of all tornadoes associated with tropical cyclones are 250 or more kilometers from the center of the storm.

Closer to the center of the hurricane, mini-vortices similar to tornadoes can also appear, although the processes of their formation are very different. They tend to be smaller and weaker, but can cause extreme damage when embedded in the background stream. Additional vortices, called tornado-like vortices and rotating vortices, can exacerbate extreme damage.

Tornadoes often become an underestimated danger in tropical cyclones, which is overlooked because they often develop amid a more noticeable hurricane phenomenon. But the whirlwind inside the tornado can be just as powerful and destructive.

In some years in the United States, 10% or more of the annual number of tornadoes occurs due to a single hurricane or storm. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 brought at least 117 tornadoes from Florida to Maryland. Then, a couple of weeks before, Hurricane Francis formed an 103 tornado. And in 1967, Beula hurricane produced an impressive 141 whirlwind.

Meteorologists note that the epicenter of Dorian, again weakened to the second category out of five possible on the Saffir – Simpson scale, is now 80 kilometers from the city of Charleston (South Carolina). The wind speed in gusts reaches 48 m / s, the hurricane moves in a northeast direction at a speed of 3,6 m / s. More than 250 of thousands of South Carolina residents were left without electricity on Thursday or experienced power outages.

The hurricane has already claimed the lives of 30 people in the Bahamas; more than 13 thousand buildings have been damaged or destroyed. According to Bloomberg, the island of Big Bahama, where about 50 thousand people live, was flooded by about 70%. All seaports and airports on the islands of Greater Bahama and Abaco are flooded or damaged, making it difficult to evacuate people.
