Trump threatened to stop financial aid to Palestine

US President Donald Trump announced his intention to stop financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority if its authorities continue to demonstrate their unwillingness to conduct peace negotiations with Israel.

He wrote about this in his microblog Twitter, добавив, что ежегодная американскую помощь палестинцам составляет «сотни миллионов долларов”.

«Мы платим палестинцам сотни миллионов долларов в год и не получаем взамен благодарности и уважения. Они даже не хотят вести мирные переговоры с Израилем… Но если палестинцы больше не хотят говорить о мире, почему мы должны переводить им огромные финансовые выплаты в будущем?”, — написал Трамп.

He added that, recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Washington removed from the negotiating table the most controversial issue (the status of Israel).

According to the Trump government budget for 2018, it is planned to allocate 260 million dollars for law enforcement and economic support programs for the Palestinian territories (west bank of the Jordan River and Gaza Strip).

The United States also pledged to provide military assistance to Israel in the amount of 38 billions of dollars over a decade, starting in the 2019 fiscal year.

Recall 6 December, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and urged the State Department to begin the process of moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

December 18 on this issue held a meeting of the UN Security Council. Then 14 from 15 of the Security Council member countries, including such US allies as Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Ukraine, supported a resolution prohibiting anyone from recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but United States used the right of veto permanent member.

December 21 held emergency meeting of the UN General Assemblyin which the 128 member countries of the General Assembly from 193 spoke out against Trump's decision.

December 25, following the United States, Guatemala announced the transfer of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israelis consider Jerusalem their capital. The Palestinians insist that the capital of the future Palestinian state should be located in the eastern part of Jerusalem, therefore the status of the city has always been the main controversial point in the peace negotiations.

Israel declared Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Day War, he captured East Jerusalem and united it with West, but the UN did not recognize this because of the claims of Palestine, so the city was divided into zones of influence and is considered an occupied territory, and all diplomatic missions of countries that have relations with Israel located mainly in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan and Herzliya.

After recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Washington proposed to declare Abu Dis suburb of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

January 2 Israeli Parliament - Knesset - adopted the law on united Jerusalem.

According to the document, for any change in the status of Jerusalem or the transfer of part of the city’s territory under the control of another country or community, even within the framework of future Israeli diplomatic agreements, from now on, support will be needed not for a simple majority (61 deputy) but for two-thirds of the Knesset There are 80 of 120 deputies.

The Palestinians called this decision “tantamount to a declaration of war” and threatened with a complete cessation of contacts on a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and also announced the end of the Oslo agreements.

The Oslo Accords, concluded at the beginning of 1990 between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, imply Israel’s recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and consent to the activities of the Palestinian National Authority in the occupied territories. According to the same agreements, the Palestinians recognized Israel’s right to exist in peace and security, renounced terrorism and assumed obligations to resolve a bilateral conflict by peaceful means.
