Trump quarrels with G7 leaders over Russia: details of the incident

Not yet time for Russia

The fact that the leaders of G7 discussed the possibility of the return of Russia, Donald Trump told reporters.

“There are people who would like Russia to return. I think it would be useful for a lot of things in the world. I think that would be positive. There are those who agree with me, and we discuss it. I don’t know what decision we will make, but last night we discussed Russia whether we want to invite them back or not,” Donald Trump said on Sunday.

However, this proposal of Trump did not meet with understanding at the summit.

“(The conversation) became slightly tense over the idea that the G7 is a club of liberal democracies... a view clearly not shared by Trump,” Reuters quoted the unnamed official as saying.

Trump believes that it would make sense to involve Putin in negotiations on certain issues, such as Syria and Iran, given that Russia is a key player there.

However, other G7 leaders, according to France Press, citing diplomatic circles, believe that it is too early to return Russia to the group.

Russia was no longer invited to G8 meetings after the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in south-eastern Ukraine.

French President Macron believes that reviving the G8 with Russia's participation now, when the Ukrainian conflict has not been resolved, would be a sign of weakness on the part of the world's leading powers.

The head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, also does not agree with the opinion of the American president. According to Tusk, now the G7 countries have even more reasons not to rush to return Russia to the G2014 than in 8, when it was expelled from the GXNUMX.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, admitted that the Russian president will be invited to the upcoming G7 summit, which will be held in the US in 2020, as a guest.

Surprise for trump

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif appeared at a G7 meeting on Sunday, and as reported from Biarritz, this came as a surprise to Donald Trump and the American delegation.

After briefly participating in the talks, Zarif said the conversation had been constructive and tweeted that "the road ahead is difficult, but worth trying."

On Friday, on the eve of the summit, Zarif met in Paris with French President Macron.

Relations between Iran and the United States deteriorated sharply after the United States withdrew from the 2015 treaty on the Iranian nuclear program.

Five other parties to this treaty, including France and Russia, remain committed to the document, but Iran has stepped up its nuclear program in response to Washington.

Emmanuel Macron is actively trying to soften the friction that has arisen between Iran and the United States, as well as the countries party to the treaty, but Trump, apparently, is skeptical of his mediation efforts.

“We'll do our own work, but, you know, I can't stop people from talking. If they want to talk, let them talk,” said the American president.

The G24 summit, which includes France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Canada, the US and Japan, takes place in Biarritz on August 26-XNUMX.

On Monday, G7 leaders are expected to discuss a plan for technical and financial assistance to extinguish Amazon forest fires. The situation in Brazil, according to French President Macron, is becoming the scale of the international crisis.

According to reports from Biarritz, the parties are close to signing the relevant agreement.

The meeting discusses a wide range of issues, including Brexit, fires in the Amazon forests, the Iran problem and international trade.

Since 1998, the forum of leading economically developed powers has been a G2014 with the participation of Russia, but in June 8, due to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, club members decided not to go to the next GXNUMX summit in Sochi, but gathered without Russia in Brussels.
