Trump will seek restrictions on legal immigration

The administration of Donald Trump has published a report on terrorism, which should explain the need for a policy of tightening restrictions on legal migration. Writes USA TodayThe administration acknowledged that the report is incomplete and needs to be refined to show a complete picture of the threats that are born by terrorists born abroad and arriving in the United States.

The report says that from 549 sentences related to terrorism that the federal courts rendered after the September 11 terrorist attacks, 402 defendants (73%) were foreigners. In addition, from 2001 to 2017, immigration and customs agents deported 1716 people because of a “national security threat”.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated that the report’s data explains why the US should reduce “chain migration” (migration, through which green card holders could bring their relatives to the US).

“This report is a reminder of why we cannot continue to rely on immigration policies created before 11/09. It leaves us terribly vulnerable to foreign-born terrorists,” Homeland Security Secretary Kirshin Nielsen said in a statement.

However, the report does not indicate how many convicts got into the country on the principle of “chain migration” or the Green Card Visa Lottery. He also does not explain how 1716 people were deported for reasons of terrorism.

Instead, the report describes 8 cases of immigrants who have been convicted on terrorism charges. One of them entered the country as a refugee. Another one - under the visa diversity program, one was the child of a legal immigrant.

Another 5 man came to the United States under the "family member" migration program. The report does not contain information on the degree of kinship of migrants. Accordingly, it is impossible to understand whether these migrants are close relatives - the democrats are defending this immigration program; or they are distant relatives and have fallen into the United States according to the “chain migration” principle, which the Trump administration wants to eliminate.

National security officials promised to finalize the report in the coming months and provide more detailed information.

Most likely, this report will be discussed at the negotiations in the Congress, since they must work out a compromise on migration policy that would satisfy all parties.
