Illegal immigrants regularly use Uber to travel from the border to destinations within the United States. This was reported by two drivers in the border city of Yuma (Arizona). The edition told in more detail Fox News.

According to one of the drivers of this taxi service, the passengers confirmed to him that they were in the United States illegally. Another colleague of his determined their immigration status based on circumstances: for example, he picked up clients with bags along with large groups in remote places near the border, and they usually went to hotels.

“I receive a notification about the order, I’m driving to the place, and on the corner there is a group of 20-odd illegal immigrants waiting for Uber,” said the taxi driver. “Usually it’s in the middle of nowhere.”

Drivers reported that many illegal immigrants are asking to be dropped off at local hotels in the city area.

Fox News asked Uber a series of questions. For example, is the car-sharing company aware that illegal immigrants are using its services to travel to the interior of the United States, or what it has done to help its drivers. An Uber spokesman said that taxi drivers have the right to cancel a ride if they feel unsafe, they can call the police to report suspicious activity.

Another Uber driver complains that he does not know if the passengers are illegal when he accepts the order. According to him, law enforcement agencies have already warned him for transporting illegal immigrants.

“Technically, it’s illegal to transport illegal immigrants,” the taxi driver explained.

An Uber spokesman detailed the company's anti-trafficking efforts and said the company provided helpful advice to its drivers.

The surge in bookings began over the past few weeks, carriers say, just as U.S. President Joe Biden's administration announced a plan to reintroduce the "Remain in Mexico" policy, which requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while they wait. immigration court dates.

Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls heard that Uber drivers were driving illegal immigrants.

The second driver said he believed most of the illegal immigrants he transported were asylum seekers. He said that passengers sometimes ask to be taken to US authorities.

“They just indicate the destination - Border Patrol Headquarters,” he admitted.

“We’re kind of put between a rock and a hard place because it goes through the app and we don’t know they’re illegal until we start talking to them,” the taxi driver explained. “When you find out, it’s too late, and I’m not ready to leave them halfway.”

According to him, with one group he was driving there were small children, and with the other there was an elderly woman with poor mobility.

“So you feel sorry for them,” he concluded.
