What is Super Tuesday in the USA, and which presidential candidates won it?

On March 5, Super Tuesday took place in the United States - one of the most important stages of the US presidential election. On this day, members of major parties in 15 American states choose who they would like to see as a presidential candidate from their political force, reports with the BBC.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump had expectedly confident leads, including in California and Texas - these states provide the largest number of delegates to party conventions (and then voters in the main elections). Trump's rival Nikki Haley won only in Vermont.

What is Super Tuesday

On this day, voting in the presidential primaries takes place in 15 states.

It took place in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and American Samoa (formally not a state or part of a state, but an unincorporated unorganized territory of the United States in the South Pacific, that is, the part of the United States administered by the American government).

Republicans vote in all 15 of these states. Democrats - in the same states, with the exception of Alaska; they will hold preliminary voting in American Samoa as well.

The results of the Democratic primaries in Iowa, where voting by mail has been going on for several weeks, will soon be known.

Each ballot awards first-place candidates the votes of so-called delegates, who will formally vote for the nomination at both party conventions this summer.

About a third of all delegate votes are distributed on Super Tuesday—865 for Republicans and 1 for Democrats.

Republicans need at least 1 votes of delegates to approve a nomination, while Democrats need 215.

The results

As expected, this Super Tuesday didn't bring much news that would surprise observers. Trump won 14 of 15 states, while Nikki Haley won only Vermont.

Even if Trump won every state, it would be mathematically impossible for him to win the Republican presidential nomination today, and he would need 1 delegate votes to do so. Trump now has 215. The state of Vermont provides 995 delegates, which would not be enough to nominate Trump.

He will have to win several more primaries in March to fully call himself Biden's rival. However, it seems that there will be no surprises - everything is heading towards the fact that in the next presidential elections Donald Trump will try to take revenge.

Biden's nomination is not in doubt - the Democratic Party has long declared its support for the current president. No serious rivals have come forward against him, so the primaries are most likely a formality.
