US caution against traveling to a popular resort in Mexico
The US Embassy in Mexico issued a warning to US government officials who intend to visit the popular resort of Playa del Carmen, writes USA Today.
The embassy added that the US consulate in Playa del Carmen would be closed "until further notice."
The embassy said that "information about the security threat was obtained." But the report did not specify the type of threat.
The warning says that US civil servants must refuse to travel to Playa del Carmen "immediately" and not visit the resort "until further notice."
This warning was issued after the February 21 ferry exploded at the popular resort Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo. As a result of the incident, 25 people were injured, including two Americans.
On March 1, Mexican law enforcement found an explosive device on another tourist ferry. Both incidents are under investigation. After the incident, the US Embassy banned all government employees from using tourist ferries.
It is noted that at the beginning of 2018, the US State Department placed Mexico in the list of countries "2 Level: Countries with increased caution" because of the crime rate in this region. Travelers are advised to avoid such areas as: Colima, Michoacan, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas.
US government officials are not allowed to travel between many Mexican cities after dark.
