The United States will start drilling oil in new offshore areas
The administration of US President Donald Trump 4 in January proposed opening several large areas for oil and gas drilling in previously protected lawful coastal areas of the Arctic, as well as the Pacific and Atlantic oceans (Gulf of Mexico and the California coast).
The US Department of Homeland Security has already opened registration to receive offers from companies for drilling, writes LA Times.
It is proposed to start the extraction of hydrocarbons in the following areas:
Gulf of Mexico
Companies are offered more than ten new oil drilling points in the Gulf of Mexico. For decades in these waters, well-established drilling of oil and gas wells. New territories proposed for production will not fall under the Congress’s moratorium on drilling in US coastal waters. If the contracts for these points are approved, it will be the first time since 1988, when most of the eastern Gulf of Mexico will be available for drilling.
Alaska
The Trump administration is proposing to open 19 drilling sites off the coast of Alaska: 3 in the Chukchi Sea, 3 in the Beaufort Sea, 2 in Cook Inlet and 11 in other areas of Alaska.
For many years, oil drilling off the coast of Alaska has caused resistance from environmentalists, who feared an oil spill in these areas with a rich ecology.
California / Pacific
The Trump administration is proposing 7 new oil drilling sites in the Pacific Ocean - two each in Northern California, Central California and Southern California, and one in the Washington and Oregon states. No new drilling sites have been opened in the Pacific region since 1984.
Atlantic
In the Atlantic, the Trump administration is proposing 9 new locations for hydrocarbon drilling - 3 in the mid-Atlantic, 3 in the South, 2 in the North Atlantic and one off the coast of Florida. No new oil drilling leases have been offered in the Atlantic since 1983, and no drilling is currently taking place there.
Permits for drilling in these areas will be issued, despite the objections of environmentalists, government officials and businessmen who are concerned about the danger of oil spills and the collapse of coastal tourism, writes “Voice of America".
The new oil and gas development program will replace the Obama administration's 5-year leasing plan and will open up more areas for drilling in previously protected areas.
A few weeks before leaving the White House, former President Barack Obama imposed a ban on new oil and gas drilling in coastal waters in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The protected area recognized 115 million acres of water in Alaska and 3,8 million acres in the North Atlantic: from New England to Chesapeake Bay.
However, President Trump in April 2017 ordered the Department of the Interior to radically revise the existing offshore drilling plan.
In his decree, Trump noted that the US policy is to "encourage exploration and production of energy ... in order to maintain the country's position as a global energy leader and ensure energy security and sustainability in the interests of the American people."
