Washington state will provide health insurance to all residents, including illegal immigrants

About 105 Washington residents, about a quarter of the state's uninsured population, cannot access health insurance through the Washington Healthplanfinder due to federal restrictions related to their immigration status.
On Friday, December 9, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced the approval of the first-of-its-kind State Innovation Waiver under Section 1332 of the Affordable Care Act (referred to as the "Section 1332 Waiver").

Starting in 2024, all uninsured residents of the state, regardless of immigration status, will be able to access qualified health plans and stand-alone qualified dental plans, as well as be able to take advantage of Cascade Care Savings (a state subsidy that reduces premiums for clients to 250 % of the federal living wage (FPL)).
This section 1332 exemption will allow all family members to purchase coverage together through the same purchase and plan enrollment process. This will reduce the need for individuals and families in Washington to rely on less affordable or less comprehensive forms of insurance coverage or costly emergency room and unpaid care.

This opt-out is valid from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2028.
