Lucky Californian Wins $1,73 Billion Powerball Jackpot

On October 11, a California resident won the $1,73 billion Powerball jackpot, ending a long period without a top prize winner. The publication told in more detail NBC San Diego.

The lucky numbers were: 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and Powerball 10. The winning ticket was sold at Midway Market & Liquor in Fraser Park, California.

“The phone is ringing off the hook, people are congratulating each other. This is just crazy! - said the store's night worker, whose name is Duke.

“Someone owes me a truck,” he said with a smile. — Many customers come here every day to get their tickets. And a lot of them say, “Oh, if I win, I’ll give you a new truck.” So where is my truck? I'll be waiting".

He assumes that the winner was a local resident.

Before the lucky winner won the giant prize, there had been 35 straight drawings without a big winner since July 19, when a player from California matched all six numbers and won $1,08 billion.

The jackpot was the second-biggest prize in the world after 36 consecutive draws, the last time someone won the top prize since July 19. This series broke the record of 41 editions set in 2021 and 2022.

The only bigger prize was a California player's $2,04 billion Powerball win last November.

The Powerball lottery's terrifying odds of 1 in 292,2 million are designed to produce large jackpots, with the prize getting bigger and bigger each time no one wins it. The winnings have been unsuccessful in recent months.

But this does not bother those who are ready to shell out their money for the chance to get rich instantly.

Robert Salvato Jr., a 60-year-old electrician, bought 40 Powerball tickets at a hardware store in Billerica, Massachusetts.

“I would take care of the family, give my cat the prosthetic leg she needs to be pretty,” said Salvato, who recently got married.

“I could give my wife a ring on each finger,” he noted.

Nevada is one of five states without a Powerball game, so friends Tamara Carter and Denise Davis drove from Las Vegas across the state line to California to buy tickets. But at the first stop the line was so long that they gave up and went in search of another store.

“The line would have taken about three hours,” Carter estimated. “I waited probably half an hour, but the line didn’t move.”

In the same hardware store as Salvato, Kevin Button, buying a ticket, seemed to understand that the odds were good.

“I usually only buy them when the jackpot is big,” Button said. “It seems to have increased quite a bit lately.” So I've already tried several times, but I still haven't won. But maybe today it will happen.”

In most states, a Powerball ticket costs $2, and the player can choose the numbers themselves or have the computer do it.

The $1,73 billion jackpot is for a single winner, who can choose to be paid out through an annuity spread over 30 years. Winners almost always choose the payout option, which for this drawing is valued at $756,6 million.

Winnings will be subject to federal taxes and, in many states, lottery winnings taxes.

The Powerball lottery is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
