El Salvador will grant citizenship to 5000 highly qualified specialists
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele announced on April 6 that his country will offer "5000 free passports" to highly qualified "scientists, engineers, doctors, artists and philosophers from abroad," reports IMIDaily.
That number, the president wrote in a post on X, represents less than 0,1% of El Salvador's population. Giving these people full citizen status, including the right to vote, is not a problem, Bukele said.
He believes that the contributions of these specialists will have a “tremendous impact on the society and future of El Salvador.”

Citizenship by Investment
Last month, El Salvador's Congress approved a reform to eliminate the income tax previously levied on remittances from abroad to encourage domestic and foreign investment in the economy.
El Salvador introduced the Freedom Visa program at the end of 2023. This is one of the world's first citizenship by investment programs that accepts cryptocurrencies as payment for donations of at least $1 million at the time of application.
Details about the program's structure and requirements remain scant. So far, the El Salvadoran government has not said how many investors have actually paid the hefty price for citizenship in the Central American country.
