Ranking of the world's most powerful passports in 2024: where you can go without a visa with your citizenship

The summer tourist season is still a few months away, but you need to think about destinations for a big trip now. Depending on where in the world you are traveling from, you may have a completely different process for entering certain countries, reports MansJournal.

Annually Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 national passports from around the world based on how many visa-free destinations are available on them. Japan has held first place for five years in a row: you can enter 194 countries without a visa using a Japanese passport. However, this year it shared the lead - the Singapore passport also provides visa-free entry to 194 countries. Joining the top of the list are France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The US is not among the top ten countries with the strongest passports, although it is on a broader list. They rank seventh on the list with visa-free access to 188 countries, next to Canada and Hungary. By comparison, Afghanistan, which is at the bottom of the rankings, has visa-free access to just 28 countries.

“The average number of destinations travelers can access without a visa has almost doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024,” says Dr Christian Kalin, creator of the Passport Index.

• Finland, South Korea, Sweden (193).
• Austria, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands (192).
• Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, UK (191).
• Greece, Malta, Switzerland (190).
• Australia, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Poland (189).
• Canada, Hungary, USA (188).
• Estonia, Lithuania (187).
• Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia (186).
• Iceland (185).
