Russian director demands $ 800 thousand debt from Weinstein
Russian director working in Hollywood Timur Bekmambetov intends to demand in court the Weinstein brothers studio that went bankrupt because of the sex scandal of the Weinstein Company studio (TWC) Weinstein brothers' debt in $ 800 thousand, writes News.ru.
Problems with TWC prevented Bekmambetov's new film, The Current War, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, from being released. Due to Bobi and Harvey Weinstein filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code, the film was virtually seized, along with all of the company's property and assets.
The historical drama “War of Currents” about the confrontation between the three greatest scientists and businessmen of the early 2017th century - Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla - was even predicted to win the Oscar ceremony. But Benedict Cumberbatch, who played Thomas Edison, lost his chance to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film was supposed to be released in November XNUMX, but the release was canceled due to the scandal.
On Monday, April 30, the US Delaware Court must make a final decision on the company's bankruptcy Weinstein Company. In the event of bankruptcy, all TWC assets, including films, will be auctioned off. Several venture companies have already expressed a desire to buy Weinstein brothers' company from the auction.
However, Timur Bekmambetov, who acted as the producer of the film “War of Currents,” filed a petition in advance with a request to block the sale of such an asset as “War of Currents” until the entire debt of 800 thousand dollars was paid to him. Thus, Bekmambetov strives to get to the top of the list of creditors, which fits on 394 pages, in order to be one of the first to receive the money owed to him.
