Republicans criticize Obama's visit to Cuba
Donald Trump, the leader of the Republican election race, wrote on Iwitter on Sunday: “... President Obama just landed in Cuba, and this is very important, and Raul Castro did not come to the airport to meet him. He met the Pope and others. No respect. ”
Earlier, Trump said that he did not object to the new approach of the United States to politics towards Cuba.
Republican Ted Cruz (a Cuban-American) on Monday said in an article for Politico that freedom cannot come to Cuba by "empowering dictators while they export terrorism to Latin American countries."
A Texas senator recalled that his father was tortured under the Batista regime, and his aunt, "being harassed by Castro's thugs," was forced to flee to the United States in search of freedom.
Recall that Cruise remained in the presidential race, after his rival Marco Rubio announced last week that he was suspending his election campaign. Despite leaving the presidential race, Rubio still sharply criticizes the policies of the Obama administration. In particular, on Saturday he wrote on his Facebook page that the president’s arrival in Cuba marked the beginning of “one of the most disgraceful trips ever made by the US president.”
Rubio’s position is close to some Republicans who believe that isolation is the best way to get concessions from the Cuban regime in the field of human rights.
“President Obama’s visit to Cuba and his policy of unilateral concessions to this regime are as naive as his worldview, and is just as misguided as his foreign policy towards other parts of the world,” Rubio said.
Another contender for the nomination from the Republican Party - Ohio Governor John Keysick - told MSNBC journalists that he would like to see US-Cuban relations more balanced. “It seems to me that we give away too much, and they take it away. I would like to see that they also donate something, ”said Kesik.
Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo pointed out the reason why no current US president has visited Cuba for almost 90 years. He described Obama’s visit as a concession to the dictator.
“By visiting Havana, President Obama made a real PR coup for Fidel Castro,” the congressman told the Independent Journal Review.
There are signs, however, that other Republicans are more open to the idea of improving U.S.-Cuban relations, given the business opportunities that would open up for Cubans. Amid the administration's policy to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba over the past few months, at least 15 Republican senators have supported easing restrictions on travel and trade relations with Cuba.
Contenders for the Democratic Party nomination, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, supported the improvement in US-Cuban relations.
