Speak with the crowd: Peskov explained the president’s reluctance to go to the people in Kemerovo

Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov explained why, during a trip to Kemerovo, Vladimir Putin did not go out to a crowd of thousands, which included many relatives of those killed and injured in the fire in the Winter Cherry shopping center.

Peskov answered a question from students on the talk show “To the Point” at the Faculty of Communications, Media and Design of the Higher School of Economics, writes Air force.

“Everything is quite simple,” Peskov explained. — A crowd of people, several thousand people, chanting. You know that Putin is a very specific, pragmatic president. That is, if he is asked a question, he answers it and tries to understand the essence in order to make some kind of promise. And he doesn’t make empty promises; he is very far from populism.”

According to Peskov, “it is impossible to speak in Putin’s style with a crowd of several thousand people.”

“In such a situation, coming out with rally statements that he made during the election campaign is blasphemy, it will not solve the problem, and most importantly, it will not answer the question of guilt. There is no one to talk to in detail when there are so many people,” the press secretary added.

Peskov said that he was also at that rally. He saw that there were “not even two thousand,” but more.

He also commented on the statement of the governor of the Kemerovo region, Aman Tuleyev, who said that oppositionists were “boisterous” in the square.

“Governor Tuleyev used an unfortunate word. I saw these people, there were really a lot of them, an absolute concentration of pain,” Peskov said.

He did not answer the question about the resignation of Tuleyev Peskov, saying that everything can be seen from the dialogue published on the Kremlin’s website.

Meeting with the initiative group

“There were slogans: “We want the truth,” “Tuleev resign,” and “The culprits will be brought to justice,” Peskov said. “Naturally, in an emotional environment, rumors quickly spread that there were many more deaths than the numbers that were announced.”

“During the hour that the meeting was going on, we tried to find out where there was some kind of initiative group. This was absolutely not planned, nothing. We later learned that an initiative group was organized from the living crowd - several people who decided to check the morgues themselves and count how many corpses there were,” he said.

“And they went there, and Putin asked to find out where they were. And he went to this morgue, where that same conversation took place. And there was already a conversation, clearly formulated: what claims to the authorities, on what issues they do not believe, what they want. And he gave answers, that’s what happened,” the Kremlin spokesman explained.

“Most often this is what happens: gossip, the spread of word of mouth, especially in such tragic situations. By the way, there were well-wishers in quotation marks—those who deliberately spread such information,” Peskov said.

“We installed injections - mainly from two countries: from Ukraine and Turkey. Another question is why from these countries, but information about 300-400-500 dead is thrown in this way,” he added.

Fire in the Kemerovo shopping center "Winter Cherry" happened 25 March and took the lives of 64 people. 28 March in Russia was mourned for the dead.

Putin arrived in Kemerovo early in the morning of March 27, when a rally of thousands of victims and citizens was held there. He drove through the blocked streets, alone laid flowers at the memorial at the place of people's deaths, then met with officials and a small "initiative group" of the relatives of the victims.

28 March it became known that the Basmanny Court of Moscow ruled arrest in absentia Nikita Kuvikov, a citizen of Ukraine, known by his pseudonym Yevgeny Volnov, who for his channel on YouTube called government offices during a fire in the Kemerovo shopping center and, posing as an EMERCOM employee, spoke about the 300 of the victims
