President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko points to the need to maintain sanctions against the Russian Federation until the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Russia continues to supply weapons and troops in certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, said President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

“It’s no surprise to anyone that Russia is still supplying troops and heavy weapons to the Donbass,” the president said before talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

According to him, neither Ukrainian society nor Ukrainian politicians have any confidence that Russia will fulfill its obligations.

“Their forces continue to fire at Ukrainian military and civilians. And the number of shellings has increased, and already in January we have 1200 shellings, about 40 shellings a day,” Poroshenko said.

He believes that Russia and the militants are not interested in peace and stability in the Donbas.

“For Russia, the conflict in Donbass is a tool for maintaining destabilization in Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.

He stressed that Western sanctions should be maintained until the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

“It is obvious that sanctions against Russia should remain until Russia fully implements the Minsk agreements and until it gets out of Donbass. Until he takes back his troops, his weapons and until control on the border is restored,” the president said.
