Red Cross: up to two thousand people disappeared in Ukraine in a year and a half
During the conflict in Donbass, at least 2 thousand people disappeared without a trace. This was stated by the head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine Alain Eshliman.
“According to the information we have, at least two thousand people have disappeared, and there is no news from them,” he said.
He noted that in 2015, Red Cross employees were able to visit about 580 people in 30 places of detention in the territory controlled by Kiev. Eshliman explained that they were taken into custody in connection with the conflict in the Donbas.
He also added that the committee is working with the Ukrainian authorities to gain access to absolutely all detainees in connection with the conflict.
A representative of the International Committee said that in the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in January 2015, Red Cross officers visited only four wounded prisoners.
“Since then, we have not been able to visit anyone captured in connection with the conflict in either the DPR or the LPR, and we are trying to improve the situation in this area and gain access to these people in order to help local authorities ensure humane treatment and normal conditions of detention for them,” he added.
