'I was the best mother I could be': a nurse from paradise on fire said goodbye to children
Everything around was engulfed in flames because of the Camp fire, and Tamara Ferguson did what she thought was the last thing to do before she died — she called her children.
A nurse from Paradise Hospital for 45 minutes helped evacuate 70 patients. When she finally left the fire zone in an ambulance, then after about a mile she and the remaining patients were in a fire trap. The ambulance that was driving in front of them was completely burned out.
Ferguson took refuge in the garage of a nearby house along with other medical staff and some patients, including the woman she had just been given during the delivery of the caesarean section, and the woman on the gurney. Another stationary patient had to be temporarily left in the car.
Later, a fireman came to them with sad news, so Ferguson decided to call her children - four daughters and a son, two of whom are older than 18 years, and say that she will not return home.
She said goodbye to them.
“I'm trapped in fire. Everything is burning around me. “I love you,” she told them, writes the Los Angeles Times, telling about this tragic story.
“I was the best mother I could be,” she said. - I apologize for the mistakes I made. I am so sorry. Take care of Brayden, Allison and Brooke. Make sure they know how much I love them."
However, despite the smoke, ash and heat, which stopped breathing, the group managed to survive. The fireman returned to them and instructed Ferguson and the others how to clean the area around the house, as well as wet the roof and the fence with water.
Eventually, the fire began to recede, and they were able to return to the hospital, after which Ferguson went home, where the children did not let her out of her arms for a long time.
Camp has already been recognized as one of the deadliest fires in US history. Only two fires in the past led to more casualties: the Great 1910 fire of the year (87 dead) and the Minnesota fire of the 1918 year, which killed 450 people.
The list of missing persons after a massive fire in Northern California was reduced to 870 people.
