Three Shocking Facts About the California Forest Fire Camp
In just two weeks, a Camp Fire in Northern California destroyed more buildings than the other six worst forest fires in the state. What else is worth knowing about the most devastating forest fire.
The fire killed almost three times more people than Griffith Park Fire, which held the championship for 85 years. Until now, 870 residents of Paradise are missing. This number is likely to increase.
Also staggering was the pace of the spread of fire as it swept the Paradise. During the first 14 hours, the fire destroyed 20 000 acres, increasing losses to more than 100 000 acres in two days.
Further, USA Today journalists examined a record number of dead and damaged structures, according to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection of California, and the speed with which the fire expanded.
Authorities confirmed 81's death and continue sifting the ashes of burnt houses and businesses in search of more remains.
Butte County Sheriff Cory Honea called on residents of the region to check whether they or their friends or family members are on the list. Honea hopes that the list will be significantly reduced when residents confirm that they are safe.
The fire burned 12 homes, 637 businesses and 483 barns and other buildings, according to Cal Fire. The total of 3718 buildings is more than triple the losses from last fall's Tubbs Fire in Napa and Sonoma.
Camp fire began to spread rapidly around noon on November 8, burning 10 0000 acres in 90 minutes — more than a football field every second. He incinerated over 70 000 acres per day.
And the fire is still not extinguished.
Almost 5 100 homes, businesses and other buildings are still under threat.
More than 300 vehicles, 17 helicopters and 3920 firefighters are involved in fire fighting.
