Las Vegas Police: Paddock Wounded Security Guard Before Opening Fire

Shooter Stephen Paddock 6 minutes before the mass shooting of visitors to a country music festival in Las Vegas shot a hotel security officer Mandalay Bay.

Jesus Campos heard the sounds of a drill coming from the open room of Paddock on the 32 floor in the hotel Mandalay Bay. He approached Paddock’s room, then was wounded in the leg, but survived. The shooting time of the guard - 21: 59 - 6 minutes before the most bloody event in modern US history.

“He (Campos) was injured before the mass shooting,” said Sheriff Joe Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

Paddock is believed to have made holes either for installing surveillance cameras or for shooting, Lombardo said.

New data entail an increasing number of questions about the plans and motives of Paddock. The police did not comment on what happened in the next 6 minutes after Campos was injured and whether the police knew what had happened.

Earlier, police said they arrived at Paddock’s room after he started shelling people.

It’s not clear yet if Campos could have disrupted Paddock’s plans. Lombardo said that it is possible that 64-year-old Paddock, a retired accountant and wealthy player, planned to escape from the crime scene after a mass shooting of people.

Earlier it became known that Paddock also aimed at aircraft fuel tanks, his car was stuffed with explosives, and video cameras were placed in the room.

Lombardo said investigators still did not identify the shooter’s motive, despite hundreds of hours of detective work.

“We want to find out why he did this,” Lombardo told reporters. “We would like to know the motive.”
