Petersburg ensemble LYRA invites you to a concert of Russian music in New York
For decades, the LYRA Petersburg vocal ensemble has delighted Russian and American audiences with professional performance of sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church along with live Russian folk music. In 2019, the band conducts a tour of the United States and invites to the only evening performance in Manhattan as part of this tour.
Concert takes place 12 September 2019 of the year at 19: 30 at: St John's In The Village 218 W 11th St, New York 10014. Tickets can be purchased here.
LYRA is a community of professional musicians. Most of the participants are students or graduate students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, working in various choral groups in St. Petersburg, as well as soloists of the city’s musical theaters. Although community members come from different musical professions—choral conductors, opera singers, instrumentalists, music teachers—they are all united by a love of choirs and ensemble singing.
The LYRA choral community has about 25 people, but because of the nuances of organizing a concert for such a large group, the ensemble usually performs in small groups of 5-6 people, which completely preserve the harmony of the choir.
In 2001, the LYRA participants were awarded a diploma of the international choir festival in Montreux (Switzerland). In 2005, the group became a laureate of the Coleraine International Choir Festival (Northern Ireland).
Repertoire
The main goal of LYRA is the study and popularization of Russian choral music. With their performances, the group strives to present the enormous musical heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as the traditions of Russian folk music, to everyone who is interested in Russia, its history and culture.
The collective presents examples of Russian sacred music, ranging from the ancient songs of the Orthodox Church to the works of little-known but remarkable composers of the 18th-20th centuries, as well as famous masters: D. Bortnyansky, P. Tchaikovsky, P. Chesnokov, A. Grechaninov, S. Rachmaninov, I. Stravinsky and others. The LYRA ensemble also performs folk songs of a lyrical, dance and ritual nature in arrangements of the great masters of choral music, and makes its own arrangements of folk songs.
Secular songs of Russian classics, such as S. Taneyev, P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninov and others, represent the other side of the collective’s creative activity. The repertoire also includes programs consisting of romances and arias from operas by both Russian and foreign composers.
Geography of performances
The community was created in 1994, at the same time the first concerts began. Since then, the geography of the ensemble’s performances has become quite wide: not only Russia, but also the countries of Western Europe: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden. The vocal ensemble LYRA also performs annual concert tours in the USA.
