Passengers on a Delta flight suffered heatstroke: an ambulance took several unconscious

Delta Air Lines canceled a flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta on July 17 after extreme heat made passengers feel unwell, reports Pixx11.

Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta from Harry Reed International Airport in Las Vegas on July 17 appear to have suffered heatstroke.

Passengers have been the victims of record-breaking heatwaves in the US and around the world. Delta flight was taxiing down the runway behind several planes, and the temperature on board became unbearable, reports Insider.

The number of passengers who felt unwell was not disclosed in the airline's message.

“We apologize for the experience our customers had on Flight 555 from Las Vegas to Atlanta on July 17, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the flight. Delta teams are investigating the circumstances that led to uncomfortable cabin temperatures. We appreciate the efforts of our employees and first responders at Harry Reid International,” the company said.

It is reported that several people were taken out of the plane by paramedics, several flight attendants also felt unwell.

A Delta spokesperson said passengers were compensated and others were helped with new flights. The airline also confirmed that lifeguards assisted at least one passenger due to the heat.

Christa Garvin, a producer, said the passengers were given the option to fly out but were told they would have to wait a few days before a new flight to Atlanta. Garvin also said the passengers were on the plane for nearly four hours, and that paramedics were called in because some passengers passed out and others crap themselves.

Terrifying temperatures

Temperatures near the airport on July 17 dropped to just 31C early in the morning before rising to 46C in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, when the flight was scheduled to take off.

Delta said the passengers on Flight 555 have been transferred to other flights.

"Medical teams responded to a call aboard the aircraft yesterday afternoon," Reid International Airport said in a statement on the afternoon of July 18.

The planes have air conditioning, said Billy Nolen, a former acting FAA administrator. In most cases, there is a cooling system that runs when the engines are running and an auxiliary unit that supplies cold air when the aircraft is on the runway.

But planes can get warm when switching between cooling systems, for example, Nolen points out. An airplane parked outside in warm weather inevitably heats up just as much as your car in the sun.
