In Japan, dolphins attack people: one man in the hospital with fractures

Four people were injured after being attacked by dolphins on Suisohama Beach in the Japanese city of Mihama, Fukui Prefecture. What is happening, the publication tried to figure out with the BBC.

A 60-year-old man suffered broken ribs and bites on his hands after a dolphin attacked him a few meters from the shore.

A 40-year-old man who was swimming near the shore was also bitten by a dolphin.

Two more people were injured by dolphin attacks later that day.

This isn't the first time this has happened. According to local police, six such attacks have already been reported in Fukue this year.

Signs have even been put up on the beach warning swimmers that it is dangerous to approach or touch the dolphins.

Although dolphins are not usually aggressive towards humans, their hostility towards swimmers is not uncommon.

Scientists suggest that bottlenose dolphins become very nervous when people swim near them, as this disrupts the behavioral habits of wild animals.

In Ireland in 2013, within ten days, two women were attacked by the same dolphin, one of them had a broken rib.

And a year later, five swimmers had to flee off the coast of the same Ireland, when a dolphin began to circle around them, showing obvious signs of aggression.

In addition to hostility towards people, it is known that dolphins sometimes behave extremely cruelly towards other sea inhabitants - they attack them, but do not kill them outright.

In Cornwall, southwest England, a dolphin was seen attacking a porpoise and throwing it into the air before killing it.

Scientists don't know why dolphins attack non-prey animals. One possible reason could be competition for food.
