Obama condemns Russia in the UN: main statements

Barack Obama addressed the UN General Assembly for the last time as US President. He recalled the successes of his diplomacy and noted that Russia is trying to “restore its glory by violent means,” reports rbc.ru.

Obama spoke at the UN at the opening of the 71 session of the General Assembly. This is Obama's last speech as an American leader at a similar event: January 20 2017, he will officially resign on the results of the US presidential elections scheduled for this November.

Summing up, Obama first noted the foreign policy successes of recent years. He called success a serious improvement in relations with Cuba and Myanmar, as longtime opponents of Washington, as well as the conclusion of a nuclear deal with Iran.

“A lot of work has been done that has changed the lives of many people and that would not have happened without the desire to cooperate,” Obama said. According to him, if we compare the current situation with the end of the Cold War, the world is now “more prosperous, less violent, although more unpredictable.”

“Society is filled with uncertainty, anxiety and strife. Despite unprecedented progress, people became disillusioned with government institutions, authorities became more difficult to govern, and national conflicts quickly surfaced,” Obama said.

The President noted that one of the reasons for the mutual rejection of the authorities and the people is the free market and total globalization - this leads to a growing gap between rich and poor and to social discontent.

Obama is sure that the course towards global integration should be subjected to a serious correction, which, however, would not affect the very foundations of globalization. According to the politician, there is no adequate alternative to liberal development. States in this regard should not interfere in the affairs of other states, but are obliged to purposefully build an example to follow from the inside.

According to the US president, Moscow adheres to a different position.

“In our world, which has long since left the era of empires, we see how Russia is trying to restore its glory by violent means,” he emphasized. In general, according to Obama, one of the signs of the imperfection of world diplomacy is the fact that “some large countries” allow themselves to violate international law.

Only by diplomatic means can the Syrian conflict be resolved, which has been dragging on for more than 5 years, said Obama.

“There is not and cannot be any final military victory; the difficult path of diplomacy that can end the violence and provide aid to those in need must be advanced to the end,” Obama said.

At the end of the speech, the US leader spoke with caution.

“Many times in the past, people believed that the world had finally reached an era of enlightenment, but then returned to the path of conflict and suffering. Perhaps this is the fate of our generation. We must not forget the choices of individuals that led to world wars. But we must also remember the decisions of those who created the UN to put an end to such wars,” said the US President.
