Netflix launches 'The Squid Game' reality show with the biggest prize pool in history

Netflix is ​​recruiting people from all over the world to take part in a reality television show based on its successful series “Squid Game”, reports with the BBC.

The new show will be called "The Squid Game: The Challenge." 456 people will take part in it, and, of course, life will no longer be at stake, as in the South Korean drama.

The winner will receive $4,56 million, the largest prize in television show history. The losers will have pleasant memories of participating in the project. Netflix has also confirmed that it is launching the second season of the hit series.

“Players will compete in a series of competitions inspired by the original series, with unexpected additions. Their strategies, alliances and personalities will all be tested as competitors are eliminated around them,” show organizers say.

The age limit for participants was set to be at least 21 years old.

For casting members, Netflix launched special site, people from all over the world can apply. All applicants must speak English. The exact launch date for the show has yet to be announced. Filming will begin in early 2023 and will last approximately four weeks.

456 members is a reference to the original series, which had the same number of players, with the last number assigned to the main character.

The South Korean thriller is about desperate people who are in dire need of funds to pay off debts or fulfill obligations that require huge expenses. They end up on an island where survival games are played to satisfy wealthy and gambling sponsors.

The competitions themselves are not difficult, they are based on games that many played in childhood. But the price of losing is death.

The Squid Game has become the most popular series in Netflix history. In the first 28 days of broadcasting, it was viewed by 111 million subscribers.

“It took us 12 years to launch the first season of The Squid Game last year. And “The Squid Game” only took 12 days to become Netflix’s most popular series,” said director, screenwriter and general producer of the project Hwang Dong-hyuk.

At the same time, Netflix is ​​forced to fight with competitors - other streaming services. The company was also hit by the rejection of the Russian market and the need to raise prices. In April, the company announced a drastic reduction in the number of subscribers and is preparing for what could lose millions more customers.
