Thousands of tomatoes spilled on the highway in California: slippery vegetables on the road provoked several accidents

About 300 tomatoes were scattered along an interstate highway in Northern California after a large truck carrying them collided with a vehicle, reports USAToday.

Highway Patrol Officer Jason Tyhurst said the accident happened at 5 a.m. along Interstate 80 west of Vacaville, about 56 miles west of Sacramento and 88 miles north of San Francisco.

A truck carrying 23 kg of tomatoes collided with a car and swerved, hitting another car before entering the center lane.

Tyhurst said the force of the impact was so great that about three-quarters of the cargo fell onto the highway. Passing cars turned them into a viscous slurry.

“People don’t realize how slippery the juice and tomato skins are,” he said. “As soon as the fruit hits the asphalt, it becomes like ice.”

According to Tyhurst, one car heading east got stuck on the highway and was hit by another car. According to him, another car traveling in the same direction crashed into two cars, and another car was literally hit by another car.

As a result, seven cars got into an accident - three on the east direction, including a truck, and four on the west.

Three people, including the truck driver, suffered minor injuries and one was hospitalized with a broken leg, Tyhurst said.

All lanes in both directions are closed for several hours to restore order.

“Officers from the California Department of Transportation arrived and deployed a front-end loader and sweeper,” Ticehurst said. “The roadway was open by 11:30.”

Tyhurst said he didn't know where the truck was heading.

Interestingly, in 1893, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that tomatoes, by the way they were used, should be considered vegetables when imposing customs duties, since they were served for lunch, not for dessert (although the court noted that, from a botanical point of view, tomatoes - are berries).
