Three residents of a California nursing home were given dishwashing liquid to drink: one woman died

Three residents of Atria Senior Living in California were mistakenly served dishwashing liquid instead of juice. One woman has died, reports KTLA.

On the morning of August 27, around 8:30 am, three ambulances were called to the Atria Park Nursing Home in San Mateo to attend to patients.

Three people were rushed to the hospital after "by mistake they were given dishwashing liquid instead of juice," Atria Park confirmed.

The family of 93-year-old Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell said their loved one had passed away following the incident.

Marcia Katchin said her family first heard about her mother's incident when an Atria employee called to say she had ingested a dangerous substance and that the staff had called an ambulance.

The family was told at the nursing home that the substance was "an alkaline cleaning solution that absorbs protein" when the family first learned of the incident.

Katchin added that Maxwell arrived at the hospital with "severe blisters in her mouth, throat and esophagus." Upon arrival at the hospital, Maxwell's family was told that there was nothing the medical team could do to treat the blisters.

According to Katchin, she and her family were told that rescuers believed dementia patients ingested the substance on their own. But it would have been impossible for Maxwell, as Katchin said, because her mother couldn't feed herself.

“A lot of people, like my mother, have to bring the cup to her mouth and pour the drink into her mouth,” Katchin said.

According to relatives, Maxwell is survived by eight children and 20 grandchildren.

Atria Senior Living released the following statement in response to the incident:

“We can confirm that three of our residents were recently taken to the hospital after they were mistakenly served dishwashing liquid instead of juice. We have been working with local authorities who have informed us that one resident has died. Our sincere condolences to the family. When this happened, our staff immediately contacted the authorities and the residents were taken to the hospital for examination and treatment. We are conducting our own internal investigation and the employees involved are suspended pending completion of this investigation. We will continue to work with the police and the Department of Human Services to fully investigate and evaluate the incident, and then take additional action as needed. The safety and well-being of our residents always remains our top priority. Out of respect for the people involved, we cannot comment further."

As of the evening of August 29, the San Mateo police are still investigating the incident and have not provided any further information.
