The 81-year-old man spent almost a week in a snow trap. He left his mountain home in Big Pine, California to return to his wife in Nevada, but a week later he was still not home. Read more about this story told the publication with the BBC.

Finally, the former NASA employee managed to escape from the snow trap, where he spent 6 days. All he had to eat was some biscuits and two croissants.

"This is just a miracle! – his grandson Christian shared his emotions. “We found it difficult to imagine that a person could do a lot in his life, create a great legacy, and then end up trapped in his car and die of hypothermia.”

Jerry Jouret was trapped in snow during a powerful winter storm that raged these days in California. In the northern part of the state, where the man fell into the trap, 90 cm of snow fell.

At least 13 deaths were reported in the state during the storm.

Jerry drove out of Big Pine on February 24 to his home in Nevada, and half an hour later he accidentally found himself on a small road where his SUV got stuck in a snowdrift.

But, as the grandson of the 81-year-old man said, the grandfather did not panic. He put into practice what he learned from many episodes of the reality show Survivor, which he loves to watch with his wife Sharon.

Jerry, dressed only in a light windbreaker, kept warm with a thin blanket and towel he had found in the car.

He managed to keep the car battery charged for three and a half days by periodically turning off the car.

Instead of water, he used snow. All he had to eat were cookies and two croissants.

“He survived thanks to snow, croissants and cookies,” Christian stated.

The situation worsened when the battery in the victim's car died - just when Jerry was lifting the side window to remove snow from the street. This happened two days before a man stuck in the snow was rescued. The temperature soon dropped below freezing overnight.

Jerry's rescue was complicated by bad weather, and his family knew they were wasting precious time.

“I guess he was afraid that this would be his end,” admitted Christian.

Six days later, on March 2, the helicopters finally arrived to rescue Jerry. True, they barely made it, because the pilots almost ran out of fuel, besides, one of the rescuers took the car for a stone.

They lifted the snow captive into a helicopter and took him to the hospital.

The nurses were surprised to find that the patient's vital signs were absolutely normal, with no signs of hypothermia. According to Christian, his grandfather "screamed with joy" on the phone, although he is not a very emotional man.

“I cried a lot myself. I didn’t realize then how much we take life for granted,” he admitted.

The Inyo County Sheriff's Office said the helicopter found the stranded vehicle after it was able to trace a cell phone signal.

When the rescuers approached, they saw that the window was down, and the man began to wave it from inside the car.
