'The younger did not know that there are people in the world': the family lived for years in the basement, waiting for the end of the world

Dutch authorities began a serious investigation after they discovered a family of 7 people in the basement of a farm remote from civilization - they lived there in anticipation of the “end of the world.”

Drenthe police said on Twitter that they had received information from concerned eyewitnesses who learned of people living in a "confined space" on a farm located near the town of Ruinerwold, writes Fox News.

When police went to the farmhouse on Monday, authorities found six people aged 18 to 25 and a 58-year-old man who was "uncooperative with the investigation" and was subsequently arrested. It's unclear what kind of relationship the man had with the younger men, but some reports described it as a "family."

The farm is located in Ruinerwold, a city in the north of the Netherlands with about 4000 inhabitants. According to the Dutch newspaper Dagblad van het Noorden, the farm was located on the outskirts of the village in the area known as Berguisen, where less than 200 people lived.

Mayor Roger de Groot said the family is believed to have lived on the 9 farm for years, and that authorities found "several improvised rooms where people were completely isolated from the outside world."

He added: "I have never seen anything like it."

The discovery was made after the alleged 25-year-old son of an 58-year-old man came to a pub in Ruinerwold. Visitors to the institution drew attention to his bewildered appearance and called the police.

Chris Westerbick, the owner of the pub, said that the young man was long-haired and looked "untidy." The guy said that he never went to school and wants to put an end to the situation in which he is.

The 25-year-old man added that he slipped out of the house at night because “it is impossible to do this during the day” and that he cannot return to where he came from.

Police officers examined the farm, in the living room of the house behind the cupboard they found a staircase to the basement.

According to the channel, the residents of the house had no contact with the outside world. The six younger members of the group had no idea that other people exist in the world.

A neighbor told the newspaper that he always saw only one person on the farm and was “absolutely surprised” by the news about the others.

“My legs were shaking,” he said.

In addition to the farmhouse there is a "huge" garden and many awnings, all in an unsightly form.

On Tuesday, police said a “large investigative team” was staying in the house and “investigating the situation.”
