Mayor of the American city lost her job for a racist post about Michelle Obama

The racist post on Facebook about Michelle Obama provoked a scandal involving the mayor of the city in West Virginia.

Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who runs a local nonprofit group in Clay County, wrote on her page: "It would be wonderful to have a classy, ​​beautiful and dignified First Lady in the White House."

“I’m tired of seeing a monkey in high heels,” she added. Clay Mayor Beverly Whaling responded with the following comment: “You made me happy today, Pam.”

The population of the city of Clay is only 491 people. Based on 2010 census data, there are no African Americans among the city's residents. Clay County has a population of 9 people, 98% of whom are white.

A scandalous Facebook post spread throughout the United States and attracted media attention outside the country. The petition calling for the dismissal of Taylor and Weiling, has now gathered over 85 thousands of signatures.

Newspaper Washington Post and New York Daily News reported that on Monday the author of the post, Pamela Taylor, had already been removed from his post.

In a conversation with a local radio station, which first drew attention to this story, she acknowledged that her post can be interpreted as racist.

However, Taylor claims that she did not want this and expressed her opinion only about the attractiveness and not the skin color of the first lady of the United States.

She added that she was considering the possibility of going to court with a libel lawsuit against a number of people whose names she did not name.

The Clay County Development Group, whose director was Taylor, is partially funded by federal and state subsidies. It provides services to the elderly and low-income residents of the district.

In a statement published in the Washington Post, Mayor Whaling wrote: “I did not consider this comment to be racist. I apologize that it may be misunderstood."

“What I meant was that I’m happy about the changes in the White House,” she added. “I’m sorry that my words might have offended anyone.” Everyone I know knows that I’m not a racist!”

Owens Brown, director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in the State of West Virginia, expressed his concern about what people considered permissible to say with obvious racist overtones.

“Unfortunately, this is the way things are in America today. There should be no place for such sentiments in our state,” he said.

The Chair of the Democratic Party in Belinda Biaphore sent an apology to Michelle Obama on behalf of all residents of the state.

“West Virginia stands above all of this. These radical, misanthropic and racist ideas will continue to be opposed by state Democrats,” she said.

Donald Trump won the majority in this state, gaining an 68,7% vote.
