California's largest fire area is ten San Francisco

Forest fires in northern California have become the largest in state history, the local fire service said. Flames are trying to put out thousands of firefighters, and US President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in the state.

According to the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection of California, the fire engulfed 114 800 hectares and is still growing, writes Air force. The fire was named the Mendocino Complex Fire, after the national park. Its formation was caused by the combination of two separate large fires. The area it covers is 10 times the size of San Francisco.

Previously, the largest fire in state history was considered the Thomas Fire, which occurred in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in 2017.

Almost 4000 people, including firefighters from Arizona, Washington and Alaska, take part in extinguishing the fire. They are helped by the military, as well as by more than a hundred specialists from Australia and New Zealand who have been trained in Idaho specifically for work in the United States. Now the efforts of firefighters are focused on preventing fire from spreading to residential buildings. The fire has already destroyed 75 homes, thousands of people have been forced to evacuate.

In total, eight major forest fires are currently recorded in California - because of this, US President Donald Trump declared a “natural disaster” in the state.

According to weather forecasters, the weather is making it difficult to extinguish the fires, and its negative effect will only intensify - in the coming days the temperature could rise to 43 degrees Celsius. In addition, the wind makes the work of firefighters very difficult.
