The US Congress Committee urged to investigate the murder of Nemtsov

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress unanimously approved a resolution calling on the Donald Trump administration to investigate Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, as well as to impose sanctions on those involved in this crime. This was reported by the leadership of the committee, writes Voice of America.

The draft resolution was introduced last month by Congressman Democrat Eliot Engel and Republican Senator Marco Rubio to both the House of Representatives and the Senate. It was timed to the fourth anniversary of the death of Nemtsov.

The resolution condemns the Russian authorities for concealing the circumstances of the murder of the politician and calls on the Russian government to conduct an international investigation.

Engel said that the Trump administration had not made enough efforts to investigate the murder of Nemtsov, and it was time for Congress to take matters into its own hands to demonstrate the US leadership role in this matter.

“Nemtsov was a brave fighter for democracy and free elections in Russia. Unfortunately, because of this, he was under the gun of Vladimir Putin, ”said Engel. “Now he is on the list of brave journalists, human rights defenders and political opponents killed by Putin’s henchmen in an attempt to silence any criticism of the Kremlin and eliminate everything that is perceived as a threat to the authoritarian Putin regime.”

Engel told how he met Nemtsov in Washington just a few months before he was killed.

“He made a very strong impression on me,” noted Engel. - I thought: "Wow, this is really a special person." Unfortunately, obviously, Putin thought the same thing and ordered to kill him right in Moscow. ”

The draft resolution, which is a recommendation, must be approved by the full House of Representatives, as well as by the Senate.

Nemtsov was one of the main opponents of President Vladimir Putin, and his murder was a shock to supporters of the Russian opposition.

He was shot dead near the Kremlin in February 2015 of the year. Before his death, he sharply criticized the actions of Russia in the east of Ukraine.

In the case were detained five suspects from Chechnya and Ingushetia. One of them admitted his guilt, but subsequently denied the confession, saying that he was tortured.

The committee also unanimously approved a bill prohibiting the White House to recognize the accession of Crimea to Russia. According to the text of the bill, Washington does not recognize “de jure or de facto” Russian sovereignty over the Crimea, as well as over the airspace or territorial waters of the peninsula.

The document prohibits US government agencies to take actions involving the recognition of the Crimea Russian.

However, the text contains an exception for the president: he will be able to break this rule if it meets the “interests of national security”.

Earlier it was reported that the text of the draft resolution "Call for responsibility and justice in connection with the murder of Boris Nemtsov" is a requirement for the US executive branch find the assets of the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov in Arab countries.

Let us recall that the co-chairman of the Parnassus party, Boris Nemtsov, was shot dead in the center of Moscow on February 27, 2015. The Moscow District Military Court sentenced the perpetrators of the crime, Zaur Dadaev, brothers Anzor and Shadid Gubashev, Temirlan Eskerkhanov and Khamzat Bakhaev, to imprisonment for terms of 11 to 20 years in a maximum security colony.
