Millions of patients can see through from an American medical company.
Hackers broke into the internal network of one of America’s largest clinical laboratories, causing widespread concerns about a serious cybersecurity breach. According to the company's insider, top managers were informed that the entire LabCorp computer network, a company from the Fortune 500 list, was turned off on Sunday morning after hackers tried to access private medical records of millions of people.
Now the company's technical specialists are working to bring the system back to life online after what the LabCorp representative publicly called "suspicious activity." But although the firm insists that “there is no evidence of unauthorized transfer or inappropriate use of data,” the company's insider claims that it could take several weeks before LabCorp experts find out the extent of the violation and find out if hackers retrieved any data, writes The Daily Mail.
“The only reason for a nationwide shutdown is the suspicion of unauthorized data intrusion,” says the source. But not a single fact officially confirmed by the company has yet been presented.
LabCorp was hacked and it is not yet clear whether there was a data breach. The company acted quickly to stop the hack, but concerns remain about the possible leak of private medical information about millions of patients. LabCorp operates an extensive network of laboratories and medical centers throughout the country performing standard and specialty diagnostic tests; the most common are blood tests, urine tests, and HIV tests.
Headquartered in Burlington, North Carolina, the company also operates at the National Institute of Genetics in Los Angeles with a wider network of 36 laboratories throughout the country. LabCorp, which has an annual turnover of billions of dollars in 10, offers lab services in Puerto Rico and in three Canadian provinces.
On the official website, LabCorp promises to protect the private medical information of its patients. The company also states that it will notify patients of any data breach and breach of confidentiality within 60 days after the discovery of such a fact.
LabCorp Diagnostics clients may experience short delays in getting results while the online resources are being restored. Official representatives noted that the problem exists only in LabCorp diagnostic systems and does not apply to Covance Drug Development systems.
According to Protenus, last year 477 reported data privacy breaches across the country, which affected more than 5,5 millions of records of American patients.
