Evidence confirming the actions incriminated against the “representative of culture” is the testimony of witnesses, whose names are not disclosed. According to the advocacy group, seven reliable and unrelated people say the individual, whose identity is also not publicly disclosed, provided classified information about the award winners.

In addition, this person revealed the names of two new members of the academy before they were officially announced.

According to the rules for awarding the Nobel Prize, the name of the future winner of the award must be kept in the strictest confidence until the last moment. When discussing candidates, the members of the Nobel Committee for Literature themselves do not use the real names of poets and writers, but invented pseudonyms. For example, the English playwright Harold Pinter was called “Harry Potter”, and the Frenchman Jean-Marie Gustav Leclezio was called “Chateaubriand”.

On April 6, members of the Swedish Academy were presented the results of an internal investigation into the claims of 18 women, who in the fall of 2017, accused this famous cultural representative of harassment. This man was associated with the academy, and was also married to one of its members.

After discussing the investigation data, three writers immediately announced their resignation from the institution as a sign of disagreement with “how it solves problems.” Claes Östergren, Kjell Espmark and Peter Englund did not give a specific reason for their departure, citing confidentiality.

The Swedish Academy was founded in 1786 by King Gustav III to support and develop the Swedish language and literature. Its 18 members are elected for life, so it is impossible to formally leave the academy. In practice, the departure of writers means that they simply will not participate in the activities of the institution.
