The immigration service introduces new rules for exchanging temporary green cards for permanent
Starting from 11 June 2018, applicants who have submitted the I-751 or I-829 forms (to receive a permanent green card instead of a temporary one) will receive from the Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) an I-797 form confirming the legality of their stay in the country , which will be valid for 18 months after the expiration of the temporary green card, not 12 months, as it was before.
The service made these changes because the processing time of the I-751 and I-829 forms increased over the last year, and the agency does not always have time to complete the verification process and issue a permanent green card to the applicants for 12 months.
In addition, USCIS will issue new I-797 forms to holders of temporary green cards whose applications for permanent green cards are being reviewed as of 11 June 2018. New I-797 forms will also have a validity of 18, not 12 months.
Also, USCIS recalled that the holders of temporary green cards, if necessary, to go abroad for a year or more must apply for a permit to re-enter, sending I-131 form before leaving the country.
