FDA warned Americans about the dangers of food additives: what you need to know

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced tighter controls on food additives.

Two out of three adult Americans take them, but health officials warn that some products contain unapproved ingredients and do not have the promised effect on the body.

Commissioner Scott Gottlieb explained that the FDA sent 12 warning letters and five letters of recommendation to a company whose products are “illegally sold as unconfirmed new drugs, which state that they prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease, as well as health conditions such as diabetes and cancer ".

The FDA found that one company stated that its product "has proven effective against numerous deadly viruses." Another advertised "reducing cognitive symptoms."

In the 25 years that have passed since the FDA began to regulate food additives, they have become an industry worth 40 billions of dollars.

Gottlieb said in an online statement that he is concerned that "changes in the nutritional supplement market may have outpaced the evolution of our own policies and our ability to manage emerging risks."

A trade group representing supplement manufacturers welcomed any efforts by the FDA to eliminate what it calls “bad players” from the market.

"When you have companies that don't meet quality standards or make unreasonable demands on their products, it undermines consumer confidence in all legitimate products," said Steve Meester of the Council for Responsible Nutrition.
